Think Like a Rookie

This time of year is always great to see the start of the collegiate and professional sports seasons.  Teams, coaches, and players have prepared for their opportunities to both represent their university in the sport they're most passionate about, and professional athletes have the opportunities to fulfill a lifelong dream of playing at the highest level of competition.   These teams are compiled of veteran players, fifth year seniors, and individuals that have been through multiple coaches, experiences, and even multiple programs.  Yet, there's also those players that are the "Rookies", the incoming freshman, the team members that despite their journey find themselves in a situation of being the low-person on the totem pole...the "Rookie".

As an administrative team here at MVHS, one of our readings for this school year is "The Power of a Positive Team" by Jon Gordon.  Gordon writes of positive teams working together with optimism, positivity, and belief.  His example is not of professional or collegiate athletes, but of real estate companies and the realtor's whose morale and confidence was shaken by the great recession.  He realized that coming through this difficult time, those that thrive soon after, were the "Rookies".  That despite the vast experiences of real estate veterans, the "Rookies" were not paralyzed by fear or previous circumstance.  "Rookies" according to Gordon, "aren't tainted by rejection, negative assumptions, or past experiences.  They bring and idealism, optimism, and passion to their work."

So, as we continue our journey of athletics here at Mount Vernon, I encourage you to think like a "Rookie", don't allow your past experiences good or bad to be your guide.  Think like a "Rookie" in your mind-set of optimism and passion.  Regardless of what you may have experienced, bring your something to prove, passionate, and positive  "Rookie" mindset to the HIVE, each and every day!
